Cuttlefish Silver

I have a new-found respect for jewelers.

That business is difficult.

I, ever over-caffeinated, have some fairly shaky hands. I am not really built for surgery, close-up magic or particularly fiddly crafts.

Last weekend, boyfriend and I had a red-hot go at making jewellery out of silver.

I’m not very good at it.

It’s really quite tricky, and it made me swear a lot.

I don’t have the audacity to think about producing a tutorial on the subject at this early stage of experimentation.

Let’s call it a tragic photo essay depicting a solid crafter-noon.

PHASE ONE

We made little shapes out of Fimo clay.

I chose a little diamond shape, because that was about all my skill-set allowed.

PHASE TWO

Next, you take the shape and jam it into a fillet of cuttlefish, of all things.

Then, we scratched out a big ol’ funnel-shaped hole in the cuttlefish…

And then, we zip-tied the bits of cuttlefish together.

PHASE THREE

The least safe of the ‘phases’:

Incredibly, no one was harmed in the making of these videos.

PHASE FOUR

PHASE FIVE

Power tools!

PHASE SIX

Some semblance of success:
